Sports equipmnet rentals
Tábor is an ideal place for nearly all types of sports due to its topography and the number of sports grounds. Tábor Highlands is a perfect place for cycling. The landscape full of forests and ponds literally tempts tourists to go hiking and see some of the plentiful sights or natural beauties.
Many types of sports can be performed in the Tábor region during each season. There are many sports grounds, halls, tennis courts, football pitches, ice-hockey stadiums, gyms, bowling centres, skittles alleys and shooting ranges, open-air swimming centres and horse-riding farms, and also an airport for sports airplanes, a golf course, an in-door swimming-pool and a tennis hall.
You can have a
swim in the indoor swimming pool which is only about 500 metres away from the centre of Tábor during cold months. The facility also includes an Individual relaxation centre where you can relax in a whirlpool tub, sauna or on a water-bed. The open-air water fun park is sought after during summer months – it includes a 25-metre-long swimming pool and various slides and whirlpools. The swimming resort on the bank of lake Jordán is also popular during summer. You can skate in the local ice-hockey stadium or watch an ice-hockey match. Shooting fans should not miss the shooting range in Čekanice (one of the Tábor boroughs). You can also spend a nice evening bowling or playing ricochet. If you really want to enhance your collection of holiday photos, do not forget to contact the local Aeroclub and book a sightseeing flight over Tábor.
There are numerous
tennis courts in the Tábor region. The ones under the Jordán dam are the option closest to the centre. A tennis hall has recently been built next to the ice-hockey stadium (Tenis Arena) and there is also one in Planá nad Lužnicí (7 km south of Tábor; reachable by town buses).
The nine-hole
golf courses in Alenina Lhota (near Jistebnice) and in Černická Deer Park (6 km east of Bechyně) are very attractive for golf fans. You can rent all your equipment there.
The Tábor Region is also popular with less demanding mountain
climbers who practice on cliffs along the Lužnice (namely on the right bank, 2 km from Švehla Bridge down the river) and rocks next to Choustník Castle.
Those who enjoy horse riding can visit one of the plentiful Riding Farms in the region such as the one in Sedlečko near Tábor, in Zálší, in Cunkov, Choustník, Sezimovo Ústí or in Malšice (Karolín Hotel)
It is also possible to spend an active holiday in Tábor in winter. If there is enough snow, the undulating landscape north-west of Tábor, in the surroundings of Borotín, Cunkov, Jistebnice and Balkova Lhota is excellent for
cross-country skiing. This area, which is also called the Devil´s Burden, boasts marked and professionally treated ski tracks (you can download their map from www.ceskymeran.cz). Less demanding skiers can try
ski slopes near Mladá Vožice (Horní Kouty, Radvanov) with 2 slopes and ski-lifts (650 and 250 m) or near Jistebnice (the skiing resorts Monínec, Smrkov and Hůrka).
Tábor is a sporty town. Numerous sports clubs which actively participate in a number of
sports events organized by the Town of Tábor operate there. The most renowned ones include the World Cyclo- Cross Championships, the Evening Run through Tábor, the Mayor´s Cup ice-hockey tournament, a Run in the Old Town, the Tábor Tower chess tournament, a Triathalon, the Anlen Cup mountain bike race, Terry Fox´s run and many others.
The Cyclo-Cross World Championships was held there in February 2001 when the Czech Republic won 1 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze medals.
Sightseeing flights by balloons and aeroplanes
Aeroclub Tábor offers sightseeing flights by gliders, Z-43 aeroplanes or balloons over Tábor and South Bohemia. To get to the airport from the centre head for České Budějovice. As soon as you pass the last residential houses you can see a TESCO supermarket on your right, then a petrol station and a McDonalds restaurant and afterwards a Kaufland supermarket. Go past these and go to a roundabout where you need to turn 360° and start driving in the opposite direction, but you must not go far. Turn right almost opposite the Kaufland car park and head for the Čápův Dvůr airport. It is advisable to book a flight in advance. The contact number is available from HERE.
Skating and ice hockey… no matter what the weather is like
If it is cold enough you can skate not only in the ice-hockey stadium but also on the mirror-like surface of the Jordán lake. If the ice is covered with snow there, why not take cross-country skis and find out what it takes. The Ice-hockey stadium contact number is available from HERE.
Something for families with small children
Tábor does not forget that children need places to play. Around the centre and its vicinity there are several nice playgrounds with slides, swings, benches and sandpits. If you are in the historiccentre, try the playground in Holeček Park (Holečkovy Sady) or the one in Velký Šanc under the fortification walls in Market (Tržní) Square. There is a nice walk from the centre to the playground next to the Pintovka Restaurant in the Horky neighbourhood. Close to the train station there is a children’s traffic training spot next to the Jordán lake.
